Welcome - Hopkins Nursing 130th Anniversary

When we reach historical milestones, it is great fun to look back at where nursing was, assess where it has been, and set a course as to where it’s going. Our great benefactor Johns Hopkins was a man of vision, insisting that nurses were an essential part of health care at a time when they were considered much less. But if he could have seen what we see, the impact his decisions have made, Johns Hopkins would have been as amazed—and proud—as anyone at what nurses have done with his gift and his vote of confidence.

This year we mark the 130th anniversary of Johns Hopkins Nursing by noting the lasting impact of Johns Hopkins’ gift to nursing as well as responsibilities that nurses embrace today in areas—Politics, Ethics, Business, Reach—where he could have scarcely imagined their presence.

It is an extraordinary time to be a nurse. It always has been, of course, but the avenues open to our highly motivated, incredibly skilled nurses today would have been unimaginable even to us mere decades ago. The symbiotic relationship between Johns Hopkins Hospital and the School of Nursing continues to drive patient care and innovation as together we build nurse leaders prepared for whatever the future of nursing looks like.

Meanwhile, on these pages, we celebrate Johns Hopkins Nursing’s contributions to patient care, research, and health care innovation by retracing the steps and marking the achievements of those who—for 130 years—have blazed the trail.

Welcome.
